How Workout Titan Nutrition and Cal AI compare on price, photo scanning, accuracy, what they track beyond calories, and working with a coach.
We make Workout Titan Nutrition, so we have a stake in this. How we kept it fair
The short answer
Choose Workout Titan Nutrition if you want a tracker that stays free for manual logging, weight, hydration and fasting, honest confidence ratings on every AI estimate, and a live link to your coach. Choose Cal AI if you mainly want fast photo logging backed by MyFitnessPal’s food database and you are happy to pay for it after a three-day trial.

More on Pricing
Be clear about what free means on each side. Workout Titan Nutrition’s free plan never expires, but its AI is an allowance, not a right: 15 photo scans and 15 food lookups in total, and the camera route counts as a scan whether you photograph a plate, a label or a barcode. Once they are spent you can still log from your cookbook, recent meals and by hand, and every tracker keeps working, but scanning and search need Pro. Cal AI gives you three days of everything, then needs a subscription for photo scanning.
If you scan a few meals a month, Workout Titan Nutrition costs nothing. If you scan every meal and pay annually, Cal AI is the cheaper subscription. If you pay monthly, the two are within a pound of each other. Cal AI’s plan list is longer than it looks: the same “Unlimited” plan is sold at several weekly, monthly and annual prices depending on the offer shown in the app, so check the total you will be billed before the trial ends.
Food scanning and database
Winner: Cal AIBoth scan photos, barcodes and nutrition labels; Cal AI has the bigger database behind its results since MyFitnessPal bought it, while Workout Titan Nutrition reads labels directly and cross-checks against Open Food Facts.
Workout Titan Nutrition
- Photograph a pack’s front and label together and the numbers come off the label
- Barcode lookups checked against Open Food Facts
- Plate photos estimated by AI, with portion prompts when a serving looks uncertain
- Cookbook and recent meals for the food you repeat
Cal AI
- Photo, barcode, label and typed or spoken descriptions
- MyFitnessPal’s database: over 20 million foods and 68,500 brands
- Uses the phone’s depth sensor to judge portion volume
- Watch app and saved meals
More on Food scanning and database
Cal AI was acquired by MyFitnessPal in a deal that closed in December 2025 and was announced in March 2026. The app stays separate, but its lookups now run against MyFitnessPal’s database, which is the largest in the category and includes menu items from more than 380 restaurant chains. For packaged and restaurant food that is a real advantage.
Workout Titan Nutrition takes the other route for packaged food: it photographs the nutrition panel itself, so the figures are the manufacturer’s own rather than a database entry that may be out of date, and cross-checks them against Open Food Facts.
Accuracy and transparency
Winner: Workout Titan NutritionWorkout Titan Nutrition shows the source and a confidence rating on every entry; Cal AI describes its own photo scanning as about 80% accurate and does not show confidence per meal.
Workout Titan Nutrition
- Every entry badged with where its numbers came from
- Confidence rating: high, moderate or low, based on whether sources agree
- Flags uncertain serving sizes before you save
- Every value editable; edits affect only your own log
Cal AI
- States its photo scanning is about 80% accurate
- Barcode scans draw on MyFitnessPal’s verified entries
- Portions adjustable after a scan
- Independent reviews report mixed results on mixed plates and home cooking
More on Accuracy and transparency
No app can weigh food through a camera. Both estimate portions from a photo, and both get single, clearly visible items right far more often than a stew. The difference is what they tell you about it: Workout Titan Nutrition rates its own confidence per entry, so you know which numbers to trust and which to check. Cal AI’s figure is an overall claim on its website rather than a rating on the meal in front of you.
Beyond calories
Winner: Workout Titan NutritionWorkout Titan Nutrition tracks hydration, caffeine, fasting, weight and the nutrients most apps bury; Cal AI concentrates on calories and macros.
Workout Titan Nutrition
- Saturated fat, sugar, fibre, salt and five a day, under the macros
- Hydration in a tap, with caffeinated drinks counted separately
- Intermittent fasting dial, 12 to 20 hours, with stages
- Weight in kg, lb or stone on a six-month chart
Cal AI
- Calories, protein, carbs and fat per meal
- Daily goals from a lifestyle questionnaire
- Streaks to keep you logging
- Progress analytics on paid plans
Fitness tracking
Winner: Cal AIBoth read your steps from a watch or phone; Cal AI also logs workouts and adds exercise calories to your daily budget, while Workout Titan Nutrition shows your activity and deliberately leaves your target alone.
Workout Titan Nutrition
- Connects to Apple Health or Health Connect, so any watch that syncs to your phone counts
- Daily steps and active energy on your day summary, shared with your coach if you have one
- Checks your chosen activity level against two weeks of steps
- Never adds measured energy to your calorie target: wrist estimates run high, and the target already allows for activity
- Workout logging lives in Workout Titan Coaching
Cal AI
- Step count integration
- Workout logging in the app
- Watch app
- Exercise calories folded into the daily total
More on Fitness tracking
Neither app needs its own watch app to see your steps: a watch writes to Apple Health or Health Connect on its own, and both apps read from there. The difference is what happens next. Cal AI treats exercise calories as extra budget for the day. Workout Titan Nutrition shows them but does not spend them, because in a 2017 Stanford comparison of seven wearables, wrist estimates of energy burned were 27% to 93% out, and its calorie target already includes an activity allowance. Counting the same activity twice is how a deficit disappears.
Working with a coach
Winner: Workout Titan NutritionWorkout Titan Nutrition connects to your coach on Workout Titan Coaching, so your logs reach them as you make them; Cal AI has no coach side.
Workout Titan Nutrition
- Food, weight and hydration logs appear on your coach’s dashboard as you log them
- Coach sets and adjusts your calorie and macro targets
- Sharing switched off any time, and never retroactive
- Fasting is never shared
Cal AI
- Built for individual use
- No coach or trainer view
- No sharing feature we could find
More on Working with a coach
If you are a coach, the connection is the reason to put clients on Workout Titan Nutrition: check-ins start from what they actually ate rather than what they remember, and coaches on the Performance and Infinity plans can include Pro for their clients at no cost.

Frequently asked questions
Is Workout Titan Nutrition free?
Partly. Tracking is free with no time limit: manual food logging, your cookbook, calories and macro targets, weight, hydration, fasting and the coach connection. AI photo scanning and food search are limited to 15 each for the life of the account, and the camera counts a barcode or label capture as a scan. After that they need Pro, which is £8.99 a month in the UK and makes both unlimited, plus adds the AI daily summary.
Is Cal AI free?
Cal AI offers a three-day free trial, after which photo scanning needs a subscription. Its UK App Store listing shows plans from £2.99 a week to £29.99 a year, as of 24 September 2026. Check the app for the current offer, as the same plan is sold at several prices.
Which is more accurate?
For packaged food, both are as accurate as the label or database entry they read. For a plate of food, both estimate, and neither is perfect. Workout Titan Nutrition shows a confidence rating and the source on every entry so you know which numbers to check; Cal AI describes its scanning as about 80% accurate overall.
Can I move my history from Cal AI to Workout Titan Nutrition?
There is no import from Cal AI. Most people simply start fresh: set your goals, log today’s meals and save the ones you repeat to your cookbook, and the week view fills in from there.
Does Cal AI work with a coach?
No. Cal AI is built for individual use and has no coach or trainer view. Workout Titan Nutrition connects to a coach on Workout Titan Coaching, who sees your food, weight and hydration logs as you make them and can set your targets.
