Handling exercise updates as a coach

Reply, react, mark complete, and post an update on a client's behalf. What each action signals, and why marking complete cannot be undone.

Topics: Messages & notifications

Client updates are the raw material of remote coaching. What you do with them is most of what a client experiences as being coached, so a regular routine gets more out of them than an occasional look.

Replying and reacting

You can reply to an update from the notifications feed without opening the client. You can also like it or add a reaction, which takes a second.

Reactions work as acknowledgment, and replies cover anything that needs saying. A reaction is a low-effort way of showing a client you have seen their update on a busy day.

Replies can be deleted if you post something in error. You are asked to confirm and it cannot be undone.

Marking an exercise complete

You can mark a client's exercise complete yourself, and they are notified if they have completion alerts on. The confirmation says plainly that it cannot be undone, so it is a decision rather than a cleanup.

It is the right action for an in-person session you both know happened. Marking complete work a client did not do changes the record of what was actually completed, and that record is what you read back when you review the block.

Posting an update for a client

You can post an exercise update on a client's behalf. Workout Titan Coaching confirms with "Your client's exercise update has been posted." This exists for in-person coaching, where you have the numbers and they have their hands full.

Two things worth remembering. It is their record, so log what happened. And an RPE is theirs to give: you can see the bar speed, but only they know how it felt, so ask rather than assume.

Existing updates can be edited too, which is the way to fix a mistyped weight rather than deleting and reposting.

Reading the trend, not the workout

Updates carry a trend across workouts for that exercise. One heavy day means little. Four workouts of climbing loads at a steady RPE means the program is working, and four workouts of the same load at a rising RPE means something is off, whether that is sleep, stress, or a client heading for a stall.

Substituted updates deliberately sit outside that trend, so a chart with a gap in it usually means the client could not do the prescribed movement. That is a conversation, not missing data.

A workable routine

Once a day through the feed for reactions and anything urgent. Once a week properly through each client's updates, before you write the next block. Real-time replies are not required, and the weekly pass is where the pattern across workouts shows up.
