Age is one of five details the calorie calculator asks for, alongside your assigned sex, height, weight and activity level. Together they produce an estimate of how many calories your body uses in a day.
Why age changes the number
- Resting energy use drifts down. The calories your body uses at rest tend to fall gradually, and the change is easier to see from your 30s and 40s onward.
- Muscle is part of it. Muscle mass tends to decline slowly over the years, a change called sarcopenia. Muscle uses more energy than other tissue, so less of it means a lower resting figure.
- Hormones shift too. Testosterone, estrogen and growth hormone all influence how the body uses energy, and all three decline with age.
None of this happens on a birthday. These are slow averages taken across a lot of people. The calculator treats age as one factor among five, not the deciding one.
In practice, your age, assigned sex, height and weight are used together to estimate the calories your body uses at rest. That figure is then scaled by your activity level to give the daily number you see.
What the number is, and what it is not
The result is an estimate, not a measurement. It is a starting point to track against and adjust from, rather than a figure to hit exactly.
Age is used to work out how much fuel your body needs. It does not set a limit on what you can train for. It has nothing to say about what you should weigh, at any age.
Routines change as well
Day to day movement often changes over the years, in either direction. The calculator picks that up through your activity level rather than through your age, so choose the level that matches the week you actually have.
Age is one input among five, and you can change any of the others and run the calculator again. For advice about your own health, a healthcare professional is the right place to ask.
What else changes the estimate
Assigned sex, height, weight and activity level each move the number too, and activity level usually moves it most. Each one has its own article in the Academy if you want to know what it is doing.
