Scanning a product with the camera

Photograph the front of the pack and then the nutrition panel, and both are read. Two steps, a flashlight for bad light, and the barcode picked up automatically.

Topics: Logging food

Scan pack is for anything with a label on it. You take two photographs and Workout Titan Nutrition reads the product from them. It reads the manufacturer's own figures rather than someone else's copy of them, so it usually lands closer than searching by name. What comes back is still an estimate from a photograph, so check it before you log it.

Scanning a pack

1. Tap Add to on the meal, then open the camera and choose the Scan pack tab.

2. Step 1 is the front of pack. Capture the product name and branding. A barcode in shot is detected automatically, and you do not need to line it up in any particular way.

3. Step 2 is the nutrition panel. Get the whole nutrition facts table in frame, as square-on as you can manage.

4. Tap Identify product. Nutrition reads both photographs and returns what it found.

5. Check the serving and the numbers, then log it as you would any search result.

Thumbnails for both steps sit at the bottom of the camera. Tap either to retake just that photograph rather than starting over.

Getting a clean read

  • Flatten the package. A curved label bends the rows of the table and the numbers stop lining up.
  • Use the flashlight toggle in poor light rather than moving further from the label. Grain hurts more than shadow.
  • Include the column headings. Many labels give both per 100 g and per serving, and without the headings there is no way to tell which column is which.
  • Fill the frame with the table. A nutrition panel photographed from across the kitchen is the usual reason a scan fails.

Using photos you already took

You do not have to be standing in front of the food. Attach pictures from your photo library instead and tap Read label from photo. Useful for a package you photographed in the supermarket, or a menu card you kept. If the first attempt is poor, Read label again re-runs it, and Clear photos starts over.

When it cannot read the label

You will see a message saying the label could not be read, with a suggestion to try a clearer photo or add the nutrition table by hand. Retake the nutrition photo first. That is the one that usually fails. If the label is genuinely unreadable, damaged or in a language the package does not repeat, search for the product by name instead and correct the values by hand.

Camera permission

The first time you open the camera, Nutrition asks for access and explains that it needs it to photograph packaging and nutrition labels. Decline and the scan tabs stay closed until you allow it in your device settings. Search still works without the camera.

What a scan costs

A Free account has 5 photo scans in total across the life of the account. Retaking a photograph before you tap Identify product does not spend another one. Only the identification itself does. Pro removes the limit.
