Your hydration goal and the five-a-day counter

Two goals that work differently from the rest: hydration you set yourself and log by hand, five-a-day counted automatically from the food you already logged.

Topics: Targets & goals

Your hydration goal and the five-a-day counter both sit in the expanded macro grid, and both behave unlike calories and macros. One you set and log yourself. The other is worked out for you and cannot be configured at all.

The hydration goal

Set it in Preferences under Daily goals, in millilitres, anywhere from 1 to 20,000. Leave it blank and the app uses 2,000 ml.

It is always a daily figure. There is no weekly option, because hydration does not average across days in any useful way. Drinking four litres on Sunday does not cover Monday.

2,000 ml is a reasonable default for most adults. Raise it if you train hard, work outdoors, or live somewhere hot. It is a target you chose, not a medical recommendation, and the app treats it as such.

Nothing counts towards it automatically. Hydration comes only from what you log on the hydration screen. The water in your food and the tea you did not record are invisible to it.

Caffeinated drinks are counted separately

When you log a drink you can flag it as caffeinated (coffee, tea, energy drinks). The volume still counts towards your hydration total, and the flag is a separate tally so you can see how many caffeinated drinks you had. It is information, not a penalty, and there is no goal attached to it.

The five-a-day counter

This one you never touch. The app reads the food you have already logged and estimates how many fruit and vegetable portions it adds up to, against the UK guideline of five.

The portion sizes are the standard NHS ones:

  • 80 g of fresh fruit or vegetables is one portion.
  • 30 g of dried fruit is one portion.
  • 150 ml of fruit juice or a smoothie is one portion, and only one counts a day, however much you drink. That is the NHS rule, not an app limit.

How it decides something is a vegetable

It works down a chain. First an explicit portions figure on the food, if there is one. Then the product's category from the food database, then the name of the food, then the serving size in grams or millilitres. Because the last two are inference, the count is an estimate rather than an audit.

In practice, whole recognisable foods count reliably: an apple, a bag of spinach, a tin of tomatoes. Vegetables buried inside a composite dish often do not, because nothing in the entry says how much cauliflower is in the curry. If you want the counter to reflect what you ate, log the ingredients separately.

Neither one is a target you can fail

The five-a-day goal is fixed at five and there is no setting to change it. Both counters simply show where you are. Nothing warns you, nothing is coloured red, and going over on either has no effect on anything else in the app.

Workout Titan

Two apps, one focus: fitness done properly. Coaching gives trainers powerful programmes, live progress and instant adjustments. Nutrition turns your camera into a food log. Scan a pack, a label or your meal and the numbers are done.
