You can see your daily steps and active energy next to what you eat by connecting the health app on your phone. This article covers how to connect it, what the app reads, and how to stop.
Before you start
- Anyone with a Nutrition account can connect a health app, with or without a coach.
- On iPhone, the app reads from Apple Health. On Android, it reads from Health Connect. If your phone doesn't have it, install Health Connect from Google Play.
- Whatever records your steps and activity, such as your phone, an Apple Watch, Google Fit, Samsung Health or Fitbit, needs to be sharing that data with Apple Health or Health Connect.
- If the app says 'App update needed', update the Nutrition app from the App Store or Google Play and try again.
Connect your health app
- Tap your profile picture at the top of the screen to open 'Manage account'.
- Tap 'Connected apps'.
- Turn on the Apple Health or Health Connect toggle.
- If you haven't yet agreed to us recording your health data, the app asks first. Read the message and tap 'I agree'. If you have already agreed, tap 'Connect' on the 'Sync your health data?' message instead.
- When your phone asks, allow the app to read your steps and active energy.
Once you're connected, your figures from the last 14 days appear on your day summaries.
What you'll see
- Steps and active energy show on your day summary for each day.
- If you have a daily step target under 'Preferences' > 'Daily goals', your steps show against it, for example '8,200 / 10,000'. If you have a coach, your coach sets this target.
- If you have a coach, they can see your synced figures too.
Your calorie goal doesn't change. Active energy is there for your information only. Your calorie goal already allows for your activity level, so adding a watch estimate on top would count the same activity twice.
How syncing works
Your figures sync each time you open the app. You don't need to keep it open, and you don't need to do anything else.
- The app refreshes the last 14 days each time it syncs, so data from a watch that syncs late is picked up next time.
- Figures from an iPhone and an Apple Watch are counted once, not twice. Apple Health removes the overlap before the app reads the total.
What we store
We store one total per day for each figure. We don't store individual workouts, locations or the times you were active.
If nothing shows up
If the app says 'Nothing found', it reached your health app but found no steps or active energy for the last 14 days. Check these in order.
- Permission. On iPhone, open the Health app, tap your profile picture, then 'Apps', then Nutrition, and make sure Steps and Active Energy are on. On Android, open Health Connect, tap 'App permissions', then Nutrition, and allow Steps and Active calories burned.
- Your tracker. Check that your phone or watch is recording the data in Apple Health or Health Connect.
- Sync. Close the app and open it again.
On iPhone, the app can't tell whether you allowed access. iOS shows a refusal to the app as 'no data', so permission is always the first thing to check.
Stop syncing
Open 'Manage account' > 'Connected apps', turn off the toggle and tap 'Stop syncing'.
Figures that have already synced stay on your day summaries. Nothing new is synced from that phone.
Turning off the toggle stops the app syncing, but your phone still allows the app to read your data. To remove that permission too:
- iPhone: in the Health app, tap your profile picture, then 'Apps', then Nutrition, and turn off access.
- Android: tap 'Open Health Connect' on the 'Connected apps' screen and remove the app's access.
You can also withdraw your consent to us recording health data under 'Manage account' > 'Privacy & data'. That stops your health app syncing on that phone as well. Weight logs and body details you've already saved stay until you delete them.
Using the Coaching app too
If you connect a health app in the Coaching app as well, your steps aren't counted twice. Both apps save to the same place, and each day keeps a single step total.
Steps and active energy count as health information, and we only record this data with your consent. Our Privacy Policy has the full details on how we handle it, and deleting your account explains how to remove it along with the rest of your data.
