Using the calculators

BMI, resting rate and total daily energy expenditure, worked out from a client's details. What each produces, what the activity levels mean, and the limits Workout Titan Coaching states itself.

Topics: Progress tracking

The calculators are in the dashboard menu, described as a way to run body and nutrition calculations. They take a client's details and produce three things: a BMI with its classification, a basal metabolic rate, and a total daily energy expenditure.

What each one gives you

  • BMI: a figure and a band, from underweight through to clinical obesity.
  • BMR: an estimate of what the body uses at complete rest.
  • TDEE: the resting rate scaled by activity, in kilocalories a day. This is the number most coaches want.

The activity levels

Each carries a description, and they are more specific than the usual labels:

  • Sedentary: little or no exercise, most of the day sitting.
  • Lightly active: exercise 1 to 3 times a week.
  • Moderately active: 3 to 5 days a week.
  • Very active: hard exercise 6 to 7 days a week, or a physically demanding job.
  • Extremely active: intense daily training plus a physical job.

Don't calculate is a genuine sixth option, for leaving activity out of the estimate entirely. It is useful when a client's week is too irregular to describe with one label. You get a resting figure and add your own judgement, rather than implying a level of detail the numbers do not carry.

What BMI is not

Workout Titan Coaching states the limits itself, and they are worth reading before you quote a band to a client. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat, and it takes no account of age, sex or ethnicity. A muscular client can read as overweight on it, which is a fact about the measure rather than about them.

It is a screening tool at population level. Handing an individual a classification band rarely helps them. There is no coaching decision it makes for you that measurements and the weight trend do not make better.

Responsible use

The methodology notes say it directly: these are estimates to guide dietary decisions rather than prescriptions. For anything that materially affects a client's health, involve a healthcare professional or dietitian.

In practice: use TDEE as a starting point, set the client's goals from it, then let a few weeks of weight data correct you. Your client's own trend line is better evidence than any equation. It is measuring them rather than a study population.

Workout Titan

Two apps, one focus: fitness done properly. Coaching gives trainers powerful programmes, live progress and instant adjustments. Nutrition turns your camera into a food log. Scan a pack, a label or your meal and the numbers are done.
